Fourth-generation farmer Gary DiTomaso is not sad to see the end of this growing season.
Colorado’s green chile season is winding dow. Fourth-generation farmer Gary DiTomaso is not sad to see it go. “This is the worst I've ever seen,” DiTomaso said. “I think if you look at the history, we've never had a year with this low of snowpack.” DiTomaso is right: this year produced the lowest snowpack in Colorado’s recorded history. Produced by Polina Saran, Rocky Mountain PBS

And that's the start of a pepper that will end up looking like that.
But all these flowers, the blooms dried up and died.
And on a normal year, you would never see that.
Probably 50% of our ground is empty.
We have about 80 acres of different varieties of peppers.
We usually have more, but the water was real short, so we cut back on all the produce this year.
Try to raise the best crops we can with how much water we get.
This year, in terms of water has been of the worst years for farmers.
There's been, you know, historically low snowpack and so very difficult farming conditions.
I'm kind of the guy that, I always look at the bright side.
Everybody else is, “Hey this don't look good.” It's going to work out.
I always say, it's going to work out.
This year I wasn't quite right though.
Gary, this is all hes ever don The only career, job that he's ever had.
And he's never seen anything like this.
You still have to spend all the money preparing the ground, and you're spending all the diesel fuel in the spring.
And then you only get to farm half of it where you wasted all that money on the empty ground.
Not very profitable way to make it when you got to leave half of your ground empty.
But I've never had to leave half of my ground empty before this year.
If you've only got 10 or 15% of your water supply, for example, because of the snowpack, you're going to fallow a lot of ground.
And you're going to try to concentrate it on crops that are going to give you the most economic return.
And in the Pueblo area, you know, they have a fairly senior water But it's still forced them to to fallow a lot of ground that would normally be in other crops.
So there's tremendous amount of stressors on our food supply and agriculture here in Colorado.
And my concern is that we're going to lose something very special that we have here in this state.
This ability to produce our own food, this unique climate that we have, My family's been doing this forever.
This farm right here belonged to a great uncle.
And I don't know what would happen if this was all dried up.
I guess they put houses around here.
A lot of the places where I used to farm all full of houses now.
Up farther towards the town.
A lot of its been subdivided and all the water gone.
I hope it don't get that way out here.
