Defense cites evidence that should have been redacted
Bob Menendez, the disgraced former U.S. senator who was convicted on federal corruption charges earlier this year, is seeking a new trial. Senator Bob Menendez wants his corruption conviction tossed and the right to a new trial.
The former senator's legal team says it's requesting the new trial, after prosecutors revealed earlier this month they gave jurors several pieces of evidence that were not redacted as they were supposed to be.
The prosecutors reported this error to the judge earlier this month and argued it did not warrant a new trial.
But according to Reuters, Menendez's defense team says those pieces of evidence were the only ones that tied him to the prosecution's allegations that he accepted bribes in exchange for political influence for Egyptian officials.
Menendez was found guilty on all 16 counts of corruption and bribery after a two month trial.
This summer, he resigned his position in August.
At his post verdict news conference, his defense team vowed to appeal and continue fighting.
This filing comes one day after Menendez's wife and codefendant, Nadeen, requested her trial be postponed because her lawyers may be tied up in a separate case in Washington linked to the January 6th riot.
