My name is Ismael Ahmed, director and curator of the Concert of Colors and host of WDET's "This Island Earth."
I'm here to welcome you to this year's Concert of Colors" Before we get started, I'd like to take a moment to honor the first peoples of this country and planet, after all the Concert of Colors is taking place on their land.
The Concert of Colors was started by Detroit's communities of color to celebrate their cultures and the music of all peoples and to work for peace, love and justice for all our communities.
Today, we continue in that tradition.
We'd like to thank all the staff, volunteers and artists that have made this year's event possible, especially the Detroit Institute of Arts who have played such an important role, as well as the Detroit Public Television's WTVS and Detroit Public Radio's WDET.
For this year's schedule information and also most importantly to support our efforts, go to www.concertofcolors.com, Concert of Colors being one word.
And now let's take a moment to thank our sponsors and partners.
- [Announcer] Support for this program was provided by The Kresge Foundation, DTE, AARP, The Detroit Free Press, Midtown Inc, Skillman Foundation, and michigan.com, and by these partners: Concert of Colors, Culture Source, Detroit Institute of Arts, Charles Wright Museum of African American history, The Arab American National Museum, Michigan Science Center; University of Michigan, Detroit; Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Public Television; City of Detroit Department of Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurship; Science Gallery of Detroit, WDET 101.9 FM, The Scarab Club, Keiga Foundation, Access, Hellenic Museum of Michigan, College for Creative Studies, Marx Layne, New Detroit Inc, Detroit Excellence in Youth Arts, and Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.
(upbeat music) Recorded live from the Detroit Film Theater inside the Detroit Institute of Arts, it's the 29th Annual Concert of Colors.
- I'm Rochelle Riley.
I left the news business two years ago after nearly two decades as a nationally syndicated columnist for the Detroit Free Press.
I remain a writer by trade, warrior by necessity, and I'm the author of two books, "The Burden" and "That They Lived," but my day job is fighting for our creative workforce as the city's director of arts and culture.
So I'm thrilled to introduce tonight's special performance at this year's Concert of Colors.
Few artists on Detroit's soul music scene are more respected than the powerful vocalist, pianist and and drummer, Melvin Davis.
His family moved to Detroit when he was three, but often went back to his grandparents' farm in Milledgeville, Georgia, that's where he first heard Little Richard, who used to perform at a nearby juke joint, Melvin listened and grew.
By the time he was 17, Melvin had taught himself to play piano and guitar and began writing a song a day.
This amazing singer, songwriter, drummer and band leader rose through the music ranks and worked with everyone from Smokey Robinson to David Ruffin.
The 78 year old living legend has touched so many songs by so many performers.
And yes, that's Melvin Davis drumming on Dennis coffee and the Lyman Woodward Trios's "River Rouge/ It's Your Thing."
As as a session player for Motown, that's Melvin Davis backing smokey Robinson on "Tears of a Clown."
Melvin wrote a slew of songs immortalized by such artists as J. J. Barnes, "Chains of Love," Jackie Beavers, "I need my baby."
The spotlight is on him tonight, so please welcome to the Concert of Colors stage the one, the only Melvin Davis and United sounds.
(funky music) - That's right!

And also to Rob Wiggley, our friend in Europe, and Jim O'Hara, we give a shout out to you guys 'cause I know you're going to be watching and enjoying yourselves.
